How to Prioritize MVP Features (Without Wasting 3 Months Building the Wrong Thing)
The number one reason MVPs fail isn't bad code. It's bad scoping.
I've worked with 50+ founders at Week One Labs. The pattern is always the same: someone comes in with a 47-feature Notion doc, convinced they need every single item before they can show it to a customer. Three months and $40K later, they launch to crickets - because the features they thought mattered weren't the ones users cared about.
The fix is simple, but it requires discipline: score every feature, cut ruthlessly, and ship only what tests your core hypothesis.
Here's the framework we use for every 14-day sprint.
The Problem with "Gut Feeling" Prioritization
Most founders prioritize features using some version of "I think users will want this." That's fine for brainstorming. It's terrible for deciding what to build.
Gut feeling has three failure modes. First, you over-index on features that are fun to build (dark mode, animations, admin dashboards) instead of features that validate demand. Second, you underestimate effort - "it's just a simple chat feature" turns into 3 weeks of WebSocket debugging. Third, you give equal weight to validated needs and unvalidated assumptions.
The solution is a scoring framework that forces you to quantify each feature across multiple dimensions.
The RICE Framework (Adapted for MVPs)
RICE stands for Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort. It was developed at Intercom and it's used by product teams at Atlassian, Stripe, and hundreds of SaaS companies.
We've adapted it for early-stage MVPs with four scoring dimensions:
User Impact (1-5): How much does this feature improve the core user experience? A login page is a 5 - users literally can't use your product without it. Dark mode is a 1 - nice, but irrelevant to your hypothesis.
Revenue Impact (1-5): How directly does this feature drive revenue or conversion? Payment processing is a 5 for a marketplace. An "about us" page is a 1.
Confidence (1-5): How confident are you that users actually want this? If you've done user interviews and 8 out of 10 mentioned this need, that's a 5. If it's your idea alone with no validation, that's a 1.
Build Effort (1-5): How much engineering time does this need? A simple CRUD form is a 1. A real-time collaboration engine is a 5.
The formula: (User Impact + Revenue Impact) x Confidence / Effort
This produces a score you can sort by. Features above 6.0 are must-haves. Between 3.5-6.0 are should-haves for Sprint 2. Below 2.0 should be cut entirely.

The Thin Slice Principle
Once you have your scored list, apply the thin slice principle: build one complete user journey, end to end, using only your must-have features.
Not a prototype. Not a wireframe. A production-ready product that a real user can interact with.
For most MVPs, that means 3-5 features:
- Authentication (users need to log in)
- One core flow (the thing that tests your hypothesis)
- Basic data persistence (so the experience isn't lost)
- A feedback mechanism (so you learn from users)
- Maybe payment processing (if your hypothesis is "will people pay for this")
Everything else - admin dashboards, notification systems, search, multi-language support - goes in the backlog. Not because these features don't matter, but because they don't help you learn anything new right now.
Real Example: A Job Board MVP
A founder came to us with 22 features for an AI-powered job board. After scoring with RICE:
Must-haves (shipped in Sprint 1): Job posting creation, AI-powered matching algorithm, candidate application flow, basic employer dashboard.
Cut entirely: Custom email templates, analytics dashboard, social sharing, resume parsing, interview scheduling, saved searches.
We shipped in 14 days. The founder got their first paying employer in week 3. Turns out the AI matching was the only thing that mattered - employers didn't care about analytics or email templates. They cared about seeing relevant candidates fast.
The features we cut? Some of them got built in Sprint 2. Most of them never did, because user feedback pointed us in a completely different direction.
Common Mistakes in MVP Feature Prioritization
Mistake 1: Scoring confidence too high. If you haven't talked to users, your confidence is a 1 or 2. Period. "I think users want this" is not validation.
Mistake 2: Underscoring effort. When in doubt, add 1 to your effort estimate. Integrations, real-time features, and anything involving third-party APIs always take longer than expected.
Mistake 3: Including "table stakes" features that don't test your hypothesis. Yes, you need authentication. But you don't need OAuth with Google, Apple, and GitHub on Day 1. Email/password is fine for testing demand.
Mistake 4: Not re-prioritizing after Sprint 1. Your priorities should change every sprint based on what you learned. Re-score every 2 weeks.
