Frequently asked questions
What fees does Shopify charge?+
Shopify charges you in three layers. First is the monthly subscription for your plan, which ranges from a few dollars for the Starter plan up to several hundred for Advanced. Second is payment processing, a percentage plus a fixed fee on every card sale, which is lower on the more expensive plans. Third, and the one most merchants forget, is a transaction fee that applies only when you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, charged as an extra percentage of every order on top of whatever your gateway already charges. Understanding all three together is the only way to see your true cost of selling on Shopify, which is exactly what this calculator adds up.
How do I avoid Shopify transaction fees?+
The transaction fee, which is separate from payment processing, is charged only when you use an external payment gateway such as a third-party processor instead of Shopify Payments. If you use Shopify Payments as your processor, that extra transaction fee is zero, and you only pay the normal payment processing rate. So the single cleanest way to eliminate the transaction fee is to run card payments through Shopify Payments where it is available in your country. If you must use a third-party gateway for a specific reason, moving up a plan tier reduces the transaction fee from 2 percent on Basic down to around 1 percent on Shopify and roughly 0.6 percent on Advanced, which can more than pay for the higher subscription at volume.
What are Shopify payment processing rates in 2026?+
For online card payments through Shopify Payments, the rate falls as you move up plans, from roughly 2.9 percent plus 30 cents on Basic, to about 2.6 percent plus 30 cents on the Shopify plan, to around 2.4 percent plus 30 cents on Advanced. In-person card present rates through Shopify POS are lower. These percentages sit on top of your monthly subscription, and the fixed 30 cents per order means your effective rate is higher on small baskets than on large ones. This calculator uses editable defaults so you can drop in your exact contract rate and see the blended cost across your real order volume.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for my store?+
It depends almost entirely on your monthly sales volume, because the plans trade a higher subscription for lower per-order fees. A low-volume store is usually cheapest on Basic despite its higher processing rate, since the flat monthly fee dominates when you have few orders. As order volume climbs, the lower processing and transaction fees on the Shopify and Advanced plans eventually save more than their extra subscription costs. The crossover point is different for every store, which is why guessing is expensive. Enter your real numbers here and compare the total monthly cost on each plan side by side rather than picking a tier by its sticker price.
Does Shopify take a percentage of my sales?+
Yes, but only through payment processing and, if applicable, the third-party transaction fee, not as a blanket cut of your revenue the way an app store takes 15 to 30 percent. On the standard plans Shopify does not take an additional commission on your sales beyond the processing rate when you use Shopify Payments. The exception is the entry-level Starter and buy-button style setups and certain marketplace or app-driven sales, which can carry their own fees. For a normal Shopify store on a monthly plan using Shopify Payments, your variable cost is essentially the processing rate, which is far lighter than platform commissions elsewhere.
How much does it really cost to sell a $50 product on Shopify?+
On the Basic plan through Shopify Payments, a 50 dollar order costs about 2.9 percent plus 30 cents, which is roughly 1 dollar 75 cents, leaving you about 48 dollars 25 before your monthly subscription and product costs. If you were instead using a third-party gateway on Basic, you would add a 2 percent transaction fee, another dollar, pushing the platform cost past 2 dollars 75 on that single order. Spread the monthly subscription across all your orders and the true per-order cost rises further on low-volume stores. This tool does that full stack of math so you see the real net on each order and across the month.
Are Shopify fees higher than selling on Amazon or Etsy?+
Usually no, and often meaningfully lower, because Shopify charges you for processing and a subscription rather than taking a large marketplace commission on every sale. Amazon and Etsy take a referral or listing commission that can run from around 6 percent to 15 percent or more of each order on top of payment processing, whereas a Shopify store on Shopify Payments mostly pays just the processing rate near 3 percent. The trade-off is that marketplaces bring their own buyer traffic while a Shopify store you have to drive traffic to yourself. On pure fees per sale, though, owning your Shopify storefront is typically the cheaper channel, which is what this calculator quantifies.
